Obituary: SMITH – Bernard F. “Barney”, 94, of Ebensburg, passed away June 11, 2010 at MapleWinds Care Center, Portage. Born December 18, 1915 in St. Benedict, son of the late Michael and Mary (Pavlock) Smith. Preceded in death by loving wife, Betty, on April 20, 2009 and by only daughter Jeanette Ann Barnett, brothers Sylvester, Stanley and Leonard, and sisters, Victoria Webb and Martha. Survived by grandchildren: Daniel (Barbara) Barnett, and Tammy (Gary) Anderson, of San Antonio, Texas; great grandson Jordan Anderson, sisters-in-law; Helen Carroll, Indiana, Dorothy Young, Erie and Delores Patrick, Patton and special niece and nephew, Bonnie and Bob Fox. Brother of Van Horn (Catherine), Pittsburgh and Edmund (Betty) Philipsburg. Member of Holy Name Roman Catholic Church, Ebensburg. Retired from Ward Trucking Co., Altoona. He proudly served with the US Navy in the South Pacific during World War II as Water Tender III Class, aboard the destroyer escort the USS Mack. Barney enjoyed wood-working and gardening. Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Askew-Houser Funeral Homes, Inc., Ebensburg, where a vigil prayer service will be held. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Holy Name Church, the Rev. Msgr. Arnold L. Gaus, celebrant. Committal to follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Carrolltown. Military Rites by Menoher Post 155 VFW Ritual Team.
