Obituary: BURKETT - James R., Jr., a long time resident of Ebensburg, passed away at Cambria Care Center on Monday, October 31, 2016. Jim was born on September 5th, 1929 in Indiana County and he grew up in Clymer, PA. He served in the US Navy during 1948- 1950. On August 14, 1948, he married his sweetheart Joann Rhodes, and they were lifelong companions for 68 years. Jim worked for Bethlehem Mines as an electrician and also ran an electric motor repair shop for many years in Ebensburg. Jim valued his family, and the home he shared with his wife was always a destination for family members near and far where annual family reunions were often hosted. Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing and working with his hands as well as serving in his church. Jim was a member of the Ebensburg United Methodist Church where he served as a trustee for many years. He was a member of the Gideons, Masons and Shriner organizations. James is survived by his devoted wife, Joann (Rhodes) Burkett, his daughter, Rae Marie Singer of Connecticut, and his son, James Rodney Burkett III of Ebensburg as well as 5 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and four sisters. He is preceded in death by his father, James Sr. and mother, Rae Jenkins Burkett. A memorial service to celebrate James’ life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, November 4, 2016 at the Ebensburg United Methodist Church, 100 East Highland Avenue, Ebensburg PA., Rev. J. R. Virgin, officiating. Arrangements are in the care of the Askew-Houser Funeral Homes, Inc., Ebensburg.
