Obituary of John R. Lythgoe

LYTHGOE  –  John R., 82, of Ebensburg, formerly of Mundy’s Corner, passed away October 10, 2019 at UMPC Altoona Hospital.   Born November 22, 1936 in Johnstown, son of John Henry Lythgoe, and Hannah Graham Schoop.  Last surviving member of his immediate family, he is preceded in death by his parents, step father, George Schoop; brother, Lou and sister, Jane Griffith.  Survived by wife, Laverne (Krug) Lythgoe, to whom he was married 59 years and these children:  Donald (Susan) Eppley, Mineral Point;  John Jr. “Jack” (Jan) Lythgoe, Lancaster, VA;  Reva (Sam) Evans, Warriors Mark;  Mark (Sarah) Lythgoe, Eagle Rock, Va; Lyle (Cathy) Lythgoe, Roaring Spring; Georgia (John Wirfel) Lythgoe, Ebensburg; and Daniel (Sheila) Lythgoe, of Roanoke, Va.  Also 18 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.   John was retired from US Steel and from Agway, where he was well known as a petroleum sales rep.   John was a long-time member of the gospel group “The Masters”.  He was President of the Pennsylvania Southern Gospel Music Association, founding member of the annual Duman Lake Gospel Sing, as well as many other Gospel Music offerings throughout the area.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and running dogs.  A founding member of the Jackson Twp. Rod & Gun Club and a former Deputy Warden for the Pennsylvania Fish Commission.  Member of Pike Grace Brethren Church, Mundy’s Corner.  John was an active volunteer, and enjoyed participation in many church, community, and school activities.  A USAF Korean War veteran.  Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Sunday at the Askew-Houser Funeral Homes, Inc., Ebensburg; and from 10:30 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11:00 a.m., Monday at Pike Grace Brethren Church, the Rev. Geno Bartoletti, officiating.  Interment at Pike Brethren Cemetery with military rites by the Nanty Glo/Twin Rocks/Vintondale veteran’s organizations.  In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory may be made to the Pennsylvania Southern Gospel Music Association., PSGMA, c/o Dave Pheis 434 Bethany Drive Mechanicsburg PA 17055, www.psgma.com
