LANWEHR - Helen (nee Kalenak), 97, of Kearny, New Jersey, passed away at home surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday September 30, 2015. Helen was predeceased by her beloved husband, Frederick in 1996. She was also predeceased by 10 of her 11 siblings, Michael, Mary, Andrew, John, Joseph, Daniel, Charles, George, Nicholas, and Alexander. She will be greatly missed by her cherished sons, Lawrence Lanwehr and his wife Terry; and Dr. Bernhard H. Lanwehr and his wife Mercedes. A great joy in Helen s life were her grandchildren, Emilia Penney, Bernhard M. Lanwehr, and Michael Lanwehr. Also surviving is her sister, Anna Doray. Born in Nanty Glo, Helen was a retired Hoboken, New Jersey high school teacher and the founder and president of Hoboken Educators And Retired Teachers/Staff (H.E.A.R.T.S.) from 1987-1990. After retirement, Helen also served as the legislative chair of the Hudson County Retired Teachers Association. She was also active with Literacy Volunteers of America at the Kearny Public Library; the First Lutheran Church of America, where she taught Sunday School; and the New Jersey Retired Educators Association, a division of the New Jersey Education Association. Friends will be received from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday at the Askew-Houser Funeral Homes, Inc., Nanty Glo, where Parastas will be held that evening. Brief Service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home, followed by Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m. at Holy Ascension Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Nanty Glo, the Very Rev. George Hnatko. Interment to follow at Holy Ascension Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are asked to be made to either H.E.A.R.T.S., Attn: Gehler, 900 Hudson Street, Hoboken, NJ 07030 or Holy Ascension Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 980 Caroline Street, Nanty Glo, PA 15943 and will be greatly appreciated.
