Obituary of Vesta I. Scaife

SCAIFE - Vesta (Trimble), 91, passed away October 23, 2017 at Communities at Indian Haven, Indiana. Born December 30, 1925 in Wilgus, raised in Commodore, and was a long-time resident of Nanty Glo. The youngest of five children, Vesta was preceded in death by her parents Neal and Bessie (Gromley) Trimble; two brothers Earl and Leonard Trimble; two sisters Lula Belle Barger and Beula Wheeler; and her loving husband, David R. Scaife, whom she married October 19, 1948 and who died in 2008; and her infant grandson, Keith Andrew Kuftic. Vesta is survived by her daughter, Nancy (Tom) Kuftic, of Hampton, Virginia; two grandchildren and their spouses, Denise (Ed) Scearce and Tommy, Jr. (Melanie) Kuftic; and four great grandchildren: Connor Scearce, Sarah Linthicum, Alex and Zachary Kuftic; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Before she married, Vesta worked in an ammunition factory making bullets and bombs while many others were serving their country during World War II. Vesta was a sewing machine operator. She worked at the Cambria Dress Factory in Nanty Glo from its opening until its closure and retired from JoAnn Dress Factory, Ebensburg. Member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union and was a long-time parishioner of the Nanty Glo Christian & Missionary Alliance Church. Vesta had many hobbies. In her younger days, she loved playing guitar and singing country music and hymns. In addition to being a seamstress, she enjoyed crocheting, knitting, cross-stitching; and was an avid crafter. She and her husband even played golf for a short time! A special thank you to the staff and aides of Crystal Waters Personal Care Home, Communities at Indian Haven and Dr. Jamil Ahmed for providing Vesta loving care. Friends will be received from 2 p.m. until time of funeral service at 4 p.m. on Thursday at the Askew-Houser Funeral Homes, Inc., 1310 Shoemaker Street, Nanty Glo, Pastor Bud Vogel and Deacon Jim Janosik, officiating. Private interment at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Johnstown. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Vesta’s memory to the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church, 1155 Roberts Street, Nanty Glo, PA 15943.
