Obituary of Thomas M. Columbus

COLUMBUS – Thomas M., Sr., 81, of Vintondale, passed away Sunday, January 16, 2011 at home. Born November 30, 1929 in Coalport, son of the late Thomas J. and Anna (Swalligan) Columbus. Preceded in death by infant sister Anna. Survived by wife, the former Ann Dancha, to whom he was married 57 years and these children: Thomas M., Jr. (Dee) Columbus; Anthony (Kathy) Columbus, all of Vintondale and Christopher Columbus, at home. Also grandchildren Thomas M “T.M.” III and Allison Columbus, Renee Columbus PA-C, Chelsea V. Columbus, and great-granddaughter Madyson. Brother of Irene Tatarko, Twin Rocks; Margaret Kachik, Nanty Glo; Josphine Clark, Ebensburg; Stella Rogel, Cleveland, and Joseph (Debbie) Columbus, Ebensburg. Tom was a retired foreman from Bethlehem Mine #33, Ebensburg. He served as a former Fire Warden and was a member of UMWA. A Korean War veteran. Former member of the Vintondale VFW and Fireman’s Association, and former Cub Scout Leader. Member of St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church and former member of Sts. Timothy & Mark Parish, Twin Rocks & Vintondale. When his health was better, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. He was a devoted family man, he loved his family, grandchildren and great granddaughter. Friends will be received from 5-8 pm Tuesday at the Askew-Houser Funeral Homes, Inc., Nanty Glo, where a vigil prayer service will be held Tuesday evening. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday at St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church, Mundys Corner, Rev. Andrew Stanko, celebrant. Entombment, Holy Name Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests masses, or donations to the church. Military graveside rite by the Menoher Post 155 VFW Ritual Team.
