Obituary of Steven G. Neeley

NEELEY – Dr. G. Steven, Esq., 52, Colver, passed away peacefully in his sleep Sunday, March 14, 2010. Born Nov. 8, 1957, in Cincinnati, Ohio, son of Mildred "Mil" Neeley and George Neeley. He was engaged to his beloved Dr. Gina Makris. Preceded in death by father. Survived by mother; fiancee; and close friends, to include Dale, Ken, John, Don, Dr. Thomas A. Long, Dr. Nicholas Jones, Jason, Dr. Michael McKale, Dr. Timothy Menta, Grant Julian, Denise, Thomas J. Scruton, Dr. Rosemary Bertocci, Dr. Fran Rohlf, Dr. Arthur Remillard, Dr. Katherine Remillard, Father Gabriel Zeis TOR, Father Malachi Van Tassell TOR, Dr. John MacIntosh, Dr. Timothy Whisler, and all the Cincinnati friends and Colver friends. Dr. Neeley was professor of philosophy at St. Francis University, where he has taught since 1993. He took his undergraduate degree from Xavier University in 1980 and his J.D. in 1985, master's degree in 1987 and Ph.D. in 1989 from the University of Cincinnati. He published more than 20 articles and two books on a wide range of topics, to include Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Sartre, constitutional law, bio-medical ethics and philosophical psychotherapy. His law article "The Psychological and Emotional Abuse of Children" was cited by the State of Wyoming's Supreme Court in 2002. Dr. Neeley belonged to American Philosophical Association, North American Schopenhauer Society, West Virginia Philosophical Society and Pennsylvania State Bar. At St. Francis, he was an exemplary professor and colleague. He won the Swatsworth award in 1997; Honor Society Distinguished Faculty Award in 1994; Student Government Association Teacher of the Year award in 2004, 2006 and 2009; and American Philosophical Association Excellence in Teaching award in 1998. Friends will be received from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. Thursday, March 18, at Immaculate Conception Chapel at St. Francis University, where memorial service is planned for 7 p.m. Thursday.
