Obituary of Dorothy E. Montgomery
Please share a memory of Dorothy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Dorothy E. Montgomery, 95, formerly of Cresson, passed away Saturday at the Presbyterian Village at Hollidaysburg. She was born in Irvona, daughter of the late Arthur and Angela (Hollingsworth) McHugh. Surviving are her niece and longtime companion, caregiver and best buddy, Melissa McHugh; her favorite visitor and grand-nephew, "little guy" Ian Michael McHugh; nieces: Cheryl Hite (Danny) and Jennifer Barnes (Joe); nephews: Donald J. McHugh (Renee), Kim Fletcher (Sandy), William Prentice (Louella) and Richard Prentice (Jennifer); her daughter-in-law, Carolyn Leaver; and cousins: Shirley Schaeffer and Joseph Fowler. She is also survived by many grand-nieces and grand-nephews and was especially close to Sean, Rachel, Angela, Seth, Brette, Emily, Mekhi and Shayne. She was preceded in death by her husband, James G. Montgomery; a son, James "Jimmy"; two sisters: Barbara Prentice and Helen Fletcher; and a brother, Donald R. McHugh. Dorothy was a member of the greatest generation. During WWII, while her husband was serving in the U.S. Navy in the Solomon Islands, she served on the home front working at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (predecessor to NASA) aviation research wind tunnel complex in Hampton, Va. Research done in the wind tunnels helped the U.S. achieve air superiority during the war. She retired as a secretary from the Cresson State School and Hospital in 1982 and was a longtime member and Sunday school teacher at Cresson Presbyterian Church. Dorothy was a gentle, kind, compassionate woman who was an incredible Christian wife, mother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, friend and mentor. She will be greatly missed by everyone who was blessed to be in her life. She has been patiently awaiting her reunion with her husband and son and is finally "flying with the angels." Friends will be received from 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at Charles M. Kennedy Funeral Home, Cresson, followed by a funeral service at 6 p.m., Elder Robert Sheehan III and Pastor Steve Derr officiating. Interment will be at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.
