GILLETTE – Elva M. “Elvie” (Bender), 87, of Ebensburg, passed away June 15, 2017 at Amber Hills. Born December 16, 1929 in East Carroll Township, daughter of the late Dennis S. and Marie (Yeckley) Bender. Preceded in death by parents; step mother, Helen (Good) Bender; ex-husband, Glenn Gillette; brothers, Hayden, Paul, Harold, Ed, Denny, Jim, Norman, and Sherman Bender; sisters, Othella Farabaugh, Louella Gauntner, Kate Stock, and Mazie Scanlan; step sisters, Peg Bender and Doris Wike; step brother, Albert Good; and several nieces and nephews. Survived by sister, Jane (Regis-deceased) Bearer; half sisters, Denise (Joe) Fox and Betty (Pat) Leslie; half brothers, Dwight (Wendy) Bender and Ronald (Janet) Bender; step brothers, Eugene and Herbie Good. Also her special angels, Jane Ann and Bruce Schlosser; and numerous nieces and nephews. Member of Ebensburg VFW Post 4963 Auxiliary. Elvie had been employed at the Ebensburg Walmart as a greeter and had tended bar at the VFW, Yesterday’s Party, and the Old Gray Mare in Carrolltown. She enjoyed playing bingo and in her free time, loved to write poetry, some of which she was fortunate to have published. Friends will be received from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday at the Askew-Houser Funeral Homes, Inc., Ebensburg, where vigil prayer service will be held; and also from 10:30 a.m. on Monday at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Carrolltown, where Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m., the Rev. Jude Brady, celebrant. Committal, St. Benedict Cemetery, Carrolltown.
