STILES – Edward Hale Jr., 76, Johnstown, formerly of Belsano, passed away Jan. 16, 2010, at Memorial Medical Center. Born Feb. 25, 1933, in Nicktown, son of the late Edward H. "Dick" and Florence (Bennett) Stiles. Preceded in death by sisters, M. Alice, Dorothy Jane Stiles and Naomi Noland; and brothers, David George, Frederick J. and Norman S. Stiles. Survived by longtime companion, Fern Statler, Johnstown; children, Donna Graham, Homer City; Richard, married to the former Delores Miller, Shelocta; Thomas Stiles, Belsano; Nancy Stiles, Pittsburgh; Connie, wife of Daniel Chisholm, Chambersburg; Robert Stiles, Strongtown; and Kathy, wife of Heath Woods, Belsano; and grandchildren, Matthew Graham, Laura Butterly, Joanna Lunnen, Richard II, Jonathan and Robert Stiles Jr., Tashia Woods and twins, Savannah and Kayla Woods. Also great-grandchildren, Elijah and Ezekiel Butterly. Also survived by former wife, Marion (Patterson) Stiles, Belsano, and brother and sisters, M. Wayne (Gretty) Stiles, Nicktown; M. Daryl (Lynn) Joiner, Northern Cambria; Mary Martha Friend, Florida; and Erma (Murray) Lanzendorfer, Ebensburg. A longtime resident of the Connor Towers in Johnstown, where he served four years as president of the Tenant Council. Retired from Barnes and Tucker Coal Co., Mine 24B with 17 years of service. He also had been employed over the years as a farmhand and a timberman. Member of UMWA Local 1269 Bakerton. An active volunteer for the Foster Grandparent Program at the Johnstown Day Care Center and a member of the Franklin Street United Methodist Church, Johnstown. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Askew-Houser Funeral Homes Inc., Nanty Glo, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, with longtime friend the Rev. Bob Bartlebaugh officiating. Interment at Pineland Cemetery, Strongstown. A memorial service also is being planned for Johnstown area friends in the coming weeks. Contributions in Ed's memory may be made to Franklin Street United Methodist Church.
