Obituary of Sister Margie Monahan

MONAHAN – Sister Marjorie R. “Margie”, of the Carmelite Community of the Word, died October 8, 2018 at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center. She was 66. Sister Margie was born October 20, 1951 in Altoona, the daughter of Martin and June Monahan. She entered religious life on January 1, 1979 with the Carmelite Community of the Word and made her final profession of vows on August 10, 1986. Sister Margie began her ministries as a worker in the dietary department of Garvey Manor, Hollidaysburg; served as Chaplain at Laurel Crest Manor, Ebensburg before moving on to serve the Fulton County Catholic Mission in McConnellsburg for 29 years. She is survived by members of the Carmelite Community of the Word and many friends. Also surviving are brothers: Donald Eugene Monahan, Houtzdale; Jeffrey Monahan, Linden, Iowa; Clyde Monahan, Hollidaysburg; and David Monahan, of Cresson. She is preceded in death by her parents, and her community sisters, Sr. Mary Gainino, CCW (2003) and Sr. Mary Ann Palko, CCW, (2016). Friends will be received from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., Wednesday at St. Stephen Roman Catholic Church in McConnellsburg; followed by a memorial service and from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday at the Carmelite Community Motherhouse, Incarnation Center, 394 Bem Road, Gallitzin, Pa. where a vigil prayer service will be held. Funeral Mass will be held at the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel, Loretto, at 11:00 a.m., Friday, the Rev. Fr. John D. Byrnes, VF, celebrant. Committal at Holy Name Cemetery, Ebensburg. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sr. Margie’s memory may be made to the Fulton County Catholic Mission, 110 S. Third Street, McConnellsburg, Pa. 17233 or to the Carmelite Community of the Word, 394 Bem Road, Gallitzin, Pa. Arrangements are in the care of Askew- Houser Funeral Homes Inc., Ebensburg.
