MAKIN – Carl A., 93, of Colver, passed away peacefully December 21, 2018 at Cambria Care Center. Born October 9, 1925 in Strongstown, son of the late Merritt and Gertrude (Burt) Makin. Preceded in death by sons David and Bruce; son-in-law Kevin Bodenschatz, and brothers Russell and John Makin. Survived by wife, the former Irene (Toth) Makin, to whom he was married 67 years; son, Richard Makin, Curwensville; daughter Cathy Bodenschatz, Ferndale; daughter-in-laws: Gail Makin, Athens, GA.; and Janet Makin, Ebensburg; 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Also survived by brothers: Walter (Marge) Makin, Bradford, and James (Bonnie) Makin, Nicktown, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Carl was retired from the former C & I Railroad, where he had worked in the car repair shop. A WWII Navy veteran, he had enlisted on his father’s birthday on December 14, 1943, attained the rank of Radioman 3rd class, and saw action in Okinawa and Leshima, running supply LCT’s. The recipient of the Pacific Theatre Ribbon with one star, The American Theatre Ribbon, and the WWII Victory medal; he was honorably discharged on Mother’s Day, May 12, 1946. Carl was a member of the Colver Presbyterian Church for over 50 years. At his request there will be no viewing. A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family, Pastor James Sunseri, officiating, and local veteran’s organizations providing a military rite. Interment at Pineland Cemetery, Strongstown. In lieu of flowers, donations in Carl’s memory may be made to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or the Colver Presbyterian Church. Arrangements are in the care of the Askew-Houser Funeral Homes, Inc., Ebensburg.
