Obituary of Philip Ned Makin

MAKIN - Philip “Ned”, 93, of South Ebensburg (Summerhill R.D.) passed away January 20, 2019 at MapleWinds Care Center. Born November 11, 1925 in Johnstown, son of the late Clarence J. and Charlotte (Hughes) Makin. Preceded in death by wife, the former Shirley L. (Stark) Makin, grandson, Craig Sheehan and brothers, Jack, Kendal & Clyde Makin. Survived by children: Terry, married to the former Kathy Bailor, South Ebensburg; Janie, wife of Jack Cheskey, Ebensburg; Pat Pileski, Ebensburg; Nancy, wife of Mike McBreen, Emporium; Sherry Lynn, wife of Doug Sheehan, Ebensburg, and Tim Makin, of South Ebensburg. Loving “Pappy” to 15 grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Also survived by brothers: James C. Makin and Robert A. (Ann) Makin, both of South Ebensburg and sister, M. Matilda Dickson, of Greensburg. Ned was a member of the South Ebensburg United Church of Christ, where he had been active as a member of the trustee board, and was always available for any projects or maintenance around the church. He was the owner/operator of his own dairy farm for many years and retired from Agway, Ebensburg with over 27 years of service. At Agway, he also was honored with a certificate for 25 years of a perfect driving record. Ned enjoyed gardening, golf and had an incredible work ethic. If he couldn’t fix it, he knew who could. He enjoyed trips to West Virginia and to the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon with his wife. A World War II Navy veteran. Heartfelt gratitude is extended to Ned’s caregivers at home, Amy and Debby; AsceraCare, and the staff at Maple Winds Care Center. Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Wednesday at the Askew-Houser Funeral Homes, Inc., Ebensburg, where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday at the funeral home, Pastor Ryan Lucas, officiating. Interment at Lloyd Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ned’s memory may be made to the South Ebensburg United Church of Christ, 380 Wilmore Road, Portage, Pa. 15946
