DOW – George R. “Spider”. 93, of Ebensburg, passed away peacefully March 2, 2019 at McCullough House Senior Living in Johnstown. Born February 23, 1926 in Ebensburg, son of the late George M. and Elizabeth (Frieko) Dow. Preceded in death by his wife, the former Beverly L. (Minnix) Dow and sister, Betty Jane (Carl) Dahlin. Survived by children: Neal (Sheila) Dow, Canonsburg; Patricia (Tom) Hajzus, Pittsburgh; Rebecca (Howard) Scott, Johnstown; grandchildren: Alexis (Robert) Campbell, Brianna Dow, Tyler (Kathryn) Hajzus, Aly Hajzus, Ryan, Dionne and Christy Scott, and great-granddaughter, Rosemary Dow Campbell. Also survived by brother, Richard (Therese) Dow, Ebensburg, and sister-in-law Pam (Travis) Andrews, Brisbane, Australia. A lifelong member of Ebensburg United Church of Christ (Congregational). “Spider” retired from Penelec after 42 years of service beginning as a pole setter later as a line foreman. A World War II Army Air Corp veteran, where he had attained the rank of Corporal and had served abroad in Germany. Life member of the Ebensburg Post 4963 VFW; Charter and life member and former commander of Ebensburg Post 363 American Legion. Life member of Dauntless Fire Company. Spider was an avid golfer and a member of the Ebensburg Country Club. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff at McCullough House, ViaQuest Hospice and all the wonderful caregivers that showed love and support to George during his stay at home. Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Askew-Houser Funeral Homes, Inc., Ebensburg, where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, Rev. Ryan Lucas, officiating. Interment at Lloyd Cemetery. A Fireman’s Memorial Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Military graveside rites by the Ebensburg VFW and American Legion Ritual Team. In lieu of flowers, donations in Spider’s memory may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project.org (envelopes available at the funeral home)
