ELLIOTT - Elizabeth Ann (Bombach), 87, died peacefully in Cambria County, Ebensburg, PA. Born October 9, 1918 in Vinco, Jackson Twp, Betty was the daughter of Anton and Elizabeth (Kosmatin) Bombach. Preceded in death by parents; husband John T. "Jack"; son John; brothers Anthony and Karl; sisters Amelia Gay and Agnes Stiles. Survived by brother Frank Bombach, and his wife Eleanor; sister Anna, wife of George Vorhauer, Vinco; numerous nieces and nephews and God-daughter Sherry Jones of Longview, Texas. An active RN for over 60 years, Betty graduated in 1940 from Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Johnstown PA; did post-graduate work in operating room technique at Philadelphia General Hospital, Philadelphia, PA; served as Operating Room supervisor in the United States Army Nurse Corps from 1942-1946 at bases in U.S., England, France, Belgium and Germany. She was with the first Army Nurse group to land at Normandy after the invasion and waded ashore from an LST to serve at base hospitals near the front. She earned her A.D. in Nursing from Gavilan Junior College in Gilroy, California; BSN and MSN from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana and also attended Texas Womanýs University and East Texas State University. She served as In-service Instructor at both Community and County Hospitals in Hollister, California. She was also In-service Educational Director of Nursing Service and Operating Room Supervisor at Good Shepherd Hospital, Longview, where Betty was the first appointed In-service Educational Director at that facility. She was an instructor in the AD Nursing Program at Kilgore Community College in Texas, teaching medical-surgical nursing and operating room techniques. She and husband Jack served in Honduras with the U.S. Peace Corps from 1975-1977. She was a member of the American Nurses Association; Texas Nurses Association; American Operating Room Nurses Association; Texas State Teachers Association; American Association of University Women; and the American Business Women's Association, where she was named Longview's Tall Pine chapter Woman of the Year and selected as one of the national "Top Ten" ABWA Women of the Year. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Longview. Betty will be remembered for her dedication to her profession, her love of her family and the Hispanic community; and her "can-do" spirit. Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Sunday at the Askew-Houser Funeral Homes, Inc., Ebensburg, where a vigil prayer service will be held. Rev. Msgr. Arnold L. Gaus, officiating.
