Obituary of M. Euphrasia Farrell

FARRELL - Sister M. Euphrasia, RSM, 90, member of the Mid-Atlantic Community of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, died Aug. 1, 2007, at Mercy Center, Dallas. Born Kathleen Elizabeth Farrell, on Oct. 25, 1916, in Altoona, daughter of the late Benjamin and Mary A. (Muri) Farrell. Preceded in death by brothers, George, Patrick, James and John; and sisters, Florence Holmberg, Anna Marie McCaa and Gertrude Wicker. Sister of Mary Margaret Welsh, Tyrone; Rita Marie Kelliher, Springfield, Va.; and Susan Mitchell, Alfred and Michael, all of Altoona. Also survived by nieces, nephews, and the Sisters of Mercy community. Graduated from Altoona Catholic High School in 1934 and worked for the federal government in Washington D.C. for 12 years. Sister entered the Sisters of Mercy in Dallas on Feb. 2, 1946, and made her profession of vows on Aug. 16, 1948. She earned a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from College Misericordia, Dallas. Sister served in elementary schools in the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese from 1948 to 1996, serving as elementary teacher, principal and parish volunteer. She also served in a clerical position at Mercy Hospital, Johnstown. In 1997, Sister moved to McAuley Hall, Cresson, where she served as sacristan and participated in the ministry of prayer. In 2004, she retired to Mercy Center, Dallas, and continued in prayer ministry. Family and friends received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Charles M. Kennedy Funeral Home, Cresson, where vigil for the deceased will be held. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Cresson. Committal, Sisters of Mercy Cemetery, Cresson. Memorial contributions in the name of Sister M. Euphrasia may be made to the Retirement Fund, Sisters of Mercy, Mid-Atlantic Community, P.O. Box 369, Dallas, Pa. 18612.
