Obituary of Alvin J. Thomas, Sr

 

THOMAS – Alvin J. Sr., 95 of Ebensburg, passed away August 11, 2020 at the Good Samaritan Campus of Conemaugh Medical Center.  Born May 20, 1925 in Carrolltown, son of the late Andrew and Margaret (Schriff) Thomas.  Last surviving member of his immediate family, he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 yrs, Katherine L. “Betty” (Lewis) Thomas,  infant daughter Dawn Jean Thomas, brothers Francis “Pat”, Carl “Jack”, William “Bill” and Andrew “Jr” Thomas; and sisters Leona Farabaugh, Helen Gnagey, and Rita Farabaugh.  Survived by children:  Kathryn (Wade) Rager;  Alvin J. Jr “Joe” (Dee) Thomas; and Nancy (Cliff) Bish; and grandchildren:  Will Rager, Karen (Robert Jr.) Wertz, Christopher (Marquita) Rager, Tammy (William) Ray, Heather (Thomas) Malay, Jennifer Drye, and J. Scott (Kristen) Bish, twelve great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews.  Alvin was retired from Bethlehem Steel Corp where he worked as a pay-loader and had a transmission and car repair shop Mylo Park.  A World War II veteran, he achieved the rank of gunners mate first class, and was a lifetime member of the Ebensburg VFW Post 4963.  He enjoyed travel and RV-ing with his late wife, fishing and playing cinche.  He was also know by the CB handle “Blackjack” for many years when the radios were popular.  The family extends their gratefulness to the AsceraCare Hospice for the compassion and care.  At his request, the visitation and funeral service will be private, the Rev. Fr. Brian Warchola, officiating.  Interment at St. Boniface Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Alvin’s memory may be made to Ebensburg Post VFW.  Arrangements are in the care of the Askew-Houser Funeral Homes, Inc., Ebensburg.
