Obituary of Joan Carole (Wood) Hockenberry

HOCKENBERRY – Joan Carole (Wood), 83, of Nanty Glo, went to be with the Lord Feb. 1, 2023. Born Sept. 23, 1939 in Nanty Glo, daughter of the late Ernest and Christina (Laughard) Wood. Preceded in death by husband, George; sons, Charles and Brian; brothers, Tom and Ernest “Sonny”; and sisters, Mary Jane Berringer and Margaret Delehunt. Survived by children, Deborah Thomas and Earl (Joyce) Hockenberry. 13 Grandchildren. 22 Great Grandchildren. 2 Great Great Grandchildren.  Also survived by sisters, Andrea (Robert) Reed and Ellen (Robert) Dinsmore; and numerous nieces and nephews. Joan had attended First United Church of Christ  and Crossroads Alliance Church. She had been a cook at the former Valley Dairy Restaurant and the former Laurel Crest Manor; and also had worked at the former JoAnn Dress Factory, all of Ebensburg. Joan loved bingo and KFC’s dark meat chicken. Friends will be received from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday at the Askew-Houser Funeral Homes, Inc., Nanty Glo, where funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday,  Pastor Trish Wood, officiating. Interment, Lloyd Cemetery, Ebensburg. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joan’s memory may be made to Shriners Hospital or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
