Obituary of Gary Lee Newcomer

Newcomer, Spike (Gary L.) of Penn Run passed away July 14, 2023 at Indiana Regional Medical Center.  Born July 18, 1951 in Johnstown.  Son of Raymond (Babe) and Mary Lou (Robb) Newcomer. Preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Raymond F. Jr and David B., and sister-in-law Dawn L. Newcomer. Survived by his wife of 29 years, Carol (Cook), daughter Wendy (Jim), son Jesse (Dana), stepdaughters Chris Shay (Doug) and Caren McGuigan (John) and grandchildren Adam, Lexi, Alana and Kristen, sister-in-law Susan Newcomer, and several nieces.

Spike was a proud Vietnam Veteran in the United States Navy, serving as a Signalman.  After the Navy, he spent a short time on the southern leg tour as an audio tech with the Doors. He spent his retirement from the steel mills with his camp family, playing trivia and drinking beer with his friends. He loved his family.  He was in the Honor Guard, an Officer with the District VFW, Past Commander at the Nanty Glo VFW, Member of the American Legion, Polish Club, and Twin Rocks VFW.  He visited all 50 states, the last state just last year.  He missed his brothers everyday and we are thankful that they are reunited again giving Heaven some Hell until we see him again.

Friends will be received from 2-4 on Tuesday at the Askew-Houser Funeral Homes, Inc., Nanty Glo. A service will be held immediately following. In lieu of flowers, donations in Spike’s memory may be made to PA Wounded Warriors or St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Condolences may be left for the family at www.askew-houser.com
