JOHNS - George Warner, 88, of Jackson Twp., passed away peacefully May 16, 2024, at Westmont Woods, surrounded by his loving family. Born September 7, 1935 in Cambria Co., son of the late George and Phoebe (Kuchenbrod) Johns. Preceded in death by brothers: Lewzane, Lionel, Hubert, Dwyer, and infant brother Kevin; and sisters: Vilma Vivian Vandenberg, Norma Kay Johns, and Shirley Clawson. Survived by his wife, Walterine "Judy" (Poloisky) Johns, to whom he was married 62 years; and children: Frederick (Karen) Johns, Hutchinson, Pa; Christine Johns (J. Robert) Haines, Southport, NC; Joseph (Arlene) Johns, Nanty Glo; and Georgine (Mark Britton) Suder, of Boswell. Also grandchildren: Nicole, Becky, Tyler, Austin, Mark, and Chad; four great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and sister, Elaine Roberts, of Vintondale. George started his work career in the steel mills in the city of Detroit, and retired from Bethlehem Steel Corp with over 30 years of service. He will be long remembered for being a great husband, father, and pappy; and was a wonderful provider for all. He loved his mountain home, gardening, his blueberry patch, hunting, fishing, jig-saw puzzles, tinkering with small engines and possessed an appreciation for the beauty of the great outdoors. He enjoyed feeding “his” fish, birds, deer, and turkeys, trips on his 4-wheeler to check on his pond, and always shared his garden bounty with those around him. After an accident, and when his health began to fail, he proved himself to be a fighter and never gave up. Our sincere thanks to his caregivers at Westmont Woods and Hospice Staff for their love and support.
Friends will be received from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday at the Askew-Houser Funeral Homes, Inc. Nanty Glo, where a funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m., Rev. Rodney Hatfield officiating. Interment at Grandview Cemetery, Johnstown. In lieu of flowers, please consider purchasing a bird feeder and feeding the birds in George's memory.
