STEELE - James Thomas, 94 of Mineral Point, passed away September 24, 2011 at the home of his daughter in Stahlstown. Born July 15, 1917 in Bolivar, son of the late Ross and Sarah (Long) Steele. Preceded in death by granddaughter Tracey Daube; sisters Dorothy, Esther, and Verna, and brother Blair “Dick” Steele. Survived by wife, the former Rosemary Lashinsky, to whom he was married 65 years, and these children: Kathleen (Thomas) Kutz of Allentown; Judi (George) Seigh, Stahlstown; Daniel Steele, Anchorville, Michigan; Pamela (Gary) Furman, New Alexandria; amd Tammy (Dave) Dorney; grandchildren: Vicki (Joseph) Crist, Kristina (Kevin) Brown, Melissa (Buster) Glowacki, Shelley (Brian) Lewis, Benjamin (Shawna) Furman, Gary Furman Jr., and David Jr. and Derick Dorney; great-grandchildren: Stephanie and Jennifer Crist, Lauren Crist, Briley Lewis, Kaitlyn Brown, Blake, Brayde and Brooklynn Furman. Brother of Betty Reed and Melvin Steele. Jim was a retired coal miner for the former Heisley Mines, and member of U.M.W.A. A World War II Army veteran, having servied in Europe, Normandy, and Northern France, the recipient of the Distinguished Unit Badge, American Campaign Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three bronze stars. Member of the Nanty Glo V.F.W., American Legion, and the Polish American Citizens Club. Jim enjoyed hunting and fishing. Friends will be received from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Askew-Houser Funeral Homes, Inc., Nanty Glo, the Rev. Mike Trenga, officiating. Military rites by local veteran’s organizations.
